Form GST PMT-06 is a challan used for making payments of:

Tax liability

Interest

Late fees

Penalties

It is primarily used by taxpayers who have opted for the QRMP Scheme (Quarterly Return Monthly Payment Scheme).

As per Rule 87(1) of the CGST Rules, 2017, payments towards GST liability are made through a challan in Form PMT-06.

Applicability under QRMP Scheme

The QRMP scheme, introduced via CBIC Notification No. 82/2020 – Central Tax dated 10 November 2020, allows eligible taxpayers to:

File GSTR-3B quarterly

Make monthly tax payments using PMT-06

Eligible taxpayers:

Registered persons with aggregate turnover up to ₹5 crore in the preceding financial year

---

Due Dates for PMT-06 Payment

Even though returns are filed quarterly, tax must be paid monthly:

For April 2026: Due date is 25th May 2026

Payment is required by the 25th of the succeeding month

This timeline is prescribed under Rule 61A of the CGST Rules, 2017.

Methods of Tax Payment under PMT-06

Taxpayers can choose either of the following methods:

1. Fixed Sum Method (FSM)

Pay 35% of tax paid in cash in the previous quarter (for quarterly filers)

Simple and less calculation-intensive

2. Self-Assessment Method (SAM)

Pay actual tax liability based on:

Outward supplies

Input Tax Credit (ITC) available

---

Key Compliance Points

Payment through PMT-06 is mandatory even if no return is filed monthly

Ensure sufficient balance in the electronic cash ledger

No late fee for delay in PMT-06, but:

Interest @ 18% applies on delayed payment (Section 50 of CGST Act)

Excess payment can be adjusted in subsequent months

---

Practical Considerations

Reconcile sales and ITC before choosing SAM method

FSM is beneficial where turnover is stable

Monitor cash flow to avoid last-minute payment issues

Maintain proper documentation for audit and compliance

---

Conclusion

Form PMT-06 is an essential compliance tool for QRMP taxpayers to ensure timely GST payments on a monthly basis. Understanding the correct method and due dates helps avoid interest costs and ensures smooth quarterly return filing.
